What is masseter (chin) botox?

It is applied for the treatment of growth due to excessive work of the masseter muscle, which we call hypertrophy. The masseter muscle is located on both sides of our face, just above the jaw line in the lower-back 1/3 part. You can feel this muscle with the 2nd and 3rd fingers of your hand when you clenched your teeth. The task of the masseter muscle is mainly to perform the chewing function. The volume of the muscle is quite large, and its location and size may differ from person to person. It consists of superficial and deep parts. Although both types of Botox and Dysport drugs can be applied, Botox of Allergan company is mostly preferred for masseter botox in our clinic.

For what purposes is Masseter botox applied?

Clenching and grinding (bruxism) caused by excessive use of the masseter muscle is a common problem. People with clenching problems may wear their teeth, they may crack and break. These deformations in the teeth can also cause more frequent tooth decay. In people whose masseter muscle grows too much, it can contribute to the increase of headache and triggering migraine attacks with teeth clenching. This muscle is also one of the migraine botox application points. Masseter botox is applied for therapeutic purposes in people with teeth clenching and grinding problems and migraine attacks due to teeth clenching.

After the masseter muscle overgrows, the lower part of the face enlarges. People with more muscle volume have a more angular and masculine appearance on the face. The thin and delicate shape of the face is distorted. Especially athletes, people who lift weights increase the clarity of the muscle. Differences in muscle volume can be observed in terms of both genders. Although the muscle volume is generally less in women, the individual differences are very large. In cases where the face is desired to be thinner and naive, if it is desired to give the face a V-shaped appearance, masseter botox application will be the right choice.

FAQ About Masseter Botox

How long does Masseter botox last?

Classic botox application is done every 4-6 months. However, the size of the masseter muscle varies from person to person, and the session interval is opened with repetitive applications, and less frequent masseter botox application is required over time.

Is the procedure painful?

Masseter botox application is applied after cooling with local anesthetic cream and ice. The procedure is performed comfortably after anesthesia and is not painful. For the deep and superficial parts of the muscle, injection is made with very fine-tipped injectors approved by the doctor.

How is it applied?

It is of great importance to determine the correct location of the masseter muscle for the correct application of masseter botox. For correct application and avoidance of undesirable results, the patient's face should be analyzed very well and the procedure should be done in experienced hands.

Who can benefit from masseter botox?

There is no age limit for masseter botox application. It can be used for thinning the face in people with a large lower face due to hypertrophy of the masseter muscle, as well as for therapeutic purposes in those with external clenching-grinding problems. The masseter muscle enlarges unilaterally in some patients and causes asymmetry. Botox application is an appropriate treatment option for the elimination of facial asymmetry due to unilateral enlargement of the masseter muscle.

Who should not be treated with masseter botox?

With age, loss of facial elasticity and loosening of the connective tissue and sagging of the skin occur. The back of the chin, where the masseter muscle is located, adds volume to the face. In some patients, the large size of this muscle provides facial lifting. The sagging problem may become more evident when masseter botox is applied to people who do not have a correct analysis and have sagging problems on their face. It is necessary to make a good evaluation in people who are old and have a drooping face.
